Choosing the right location for your senior pictures can completely change the look and feel of your session. Whether you picture wildflowers and golden light, an urban downtown setting, beautiful architecture, or photos along the beach, the Chicago suburbs offer so many incredible options.
As an Elgin senior photographer, I photograph high school seniors throughout the Chicago suburbs and help each senior choose a location that fits their personality, outfits, and the overall look they want for their photos.
Here are some of my favorite senior picture locations throughout Chicagoland.
1. Fabyan Forest Preserve β Geneva, Illinois
Fabyan Forest Preserve is one of my favorite locations for senior pictures because it offers so much variety in one session.
The preserve has beautiful trees, open grassy areas, trails, stone features, and plenty of gorgeous natural light. Depending on the season, we can create everything from soft, natural portraits to rich fall images without traveling between multiple locations.
Fabyan is especially beautiful for seniors who want a classic, natural look while still having plenty of variety in their final gallery.
Best for: Natural, timeless senior photos
Season: Spring through fall
Location: Geneva, IL
2. Downtown West Dundee β West Dundee, Illinois
If you want senior pictures with more personality and an urban feel, Downtown West Dundee is a great choice.
Brick buildings, storefronts, stairs, alleys, sidewalks, and interesting architectural details give us lots of different backgrounds within a small area.
I especially love this location for seniors bringing multiple outfits because we can create completely different looks during one session.
Best for: Urban, modern and casual senior pictures
Season: Almost year-round
Location: West Dundee, IL
3. LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve β St. Charles, Illinois
LeRoy Oakes is another beautiful option for seniors who love a natural setting.
Open fields, mature trees, trails and seasonal greenery create a relaxed backdrop that keeps the focus on the senior. It’s particularly beautiful later in the day when the light becomes softer and warmer.
This is a great choice if you’re looking for senior pictures that feel natural without having every image look exactly the same.
Best for: Fields, greenery and natural senior portraits
Season: Spring through fall
Location: St. Charles, IL
4. Mallard Lake Forest Preserve β Hanover Park, Illinois
Mallard Lake offers a beautiful combination of open landscapes, grasses, trails and water.
It’s a great location for seniors who want their session to feel relaxed and outdoorsy. During late summer and early fall, the grasses and warm evening light can be especially beautiful.
Best for: Relaxed, nature-inspired senior pictures
Season: Summer and fall
Location: Hanover Park, IL
5. Lighthouse Beach β Evanston, Illinois
If you want something completely different from fields and forest preserves, Lighthouse Beach is hard to beat.
The combination of Lake Michigan, sand, shoreline, grasses and the lighthouse gives senior galleries a completely different look from most suburban locations.
Beach sessions are especially beautiful near sunset, when the light softens and we can incorporate movement, walking along the shoreline and even getting into the water at the end of the session.
Best for: Beachy, relaxed and editorial senior photos
Season: Summer through early fall
Location: Evanston, IL
6. Downtown St. Charles β St. Charles, Illinois
Downtown St. Charles offers another fantastic urban option for senior portraits.
With brick buildings, architectural details, walkways and a variety of textures, we can create a senior gallery that feels modern while still being timeless.
It’s especially good for seniors who want their photos to feel a little more fashion-forward rather than having a traditional nature setting.
Best for: Modern and urban senior portraits
Location: St. Charles, IL
7. Burnidge Forest Preserve β Elgin, Illinois
For seniors looking for a location closer to Elgin, Burnidge Forest Preserve offers beautiful natural scenery without having to travel far.
The preserve gives us fields, trails, trees and plenty of greenery, making it a versatile option for a classic outdoor senior session.
Best for: Natural senior pictures near Elgin
Season: Spring through fall
Location: Elgin, IL
How Do You Choose the Best Location for Your Senior Pictures?
Don’t choose a location simply because you’ve seen someone else photographed there.
Your location should work with you.
Before a senior session, I consider things like your outfits, personality, interests and the overall look you’re drawn to. Someone who loves fashion and architecture may be happier downtown, while someone who wants soft, natural portraits may love a field or forest preserve.
And if you have no idea where you want to go, that’s completely fine. Helping you choose the right location is part of the senior photography experience.
What Time Is Best for Senior Pictures?
For most outdoor senior sessions, I prefer photographing later in the day when the sun is lower and the light becomes softer.
The exact start time changes throughout the year, so your session time may be much later during the summer and earlier as we move into fall.
What Season Is Best for Senior Pictures in Illinois?
There really isn’t one perfect season.
Summer gives us long evenings, greenery, wildflowers and beach sessions.
Fall brings warmer tones, changing leaves and cooler temperatures.
Spring is often overlooked, but it can be beautiful for senior pictures. Fresh greenery, flowering trees and softer spring colors can create gorgeous backgrounds and spring can be a great option for seniors who didn’t get their photos done during the busy fall season.
The best season ultimately depends on the look you want.
