What to Wear for Urban & Downtown Family Photos
Urban and downtown locations are perfect for families who want their photos to feel a little more modern and polished. Brick, stone, storefronts, architecture and city streets give us a completely different backdrop than a traditional nature session—and your wardrobe can reflect that.
Denim, structured layers, dresses, jackets, boots and richer colors all photograph beautifully in an urban setting. The goal isn’t to dress formally; it’s to create a coordinated look that feels effortless, stylish and still completely like your family.
A Few Tips Before You Start Shopping
The goal isn’t for everyone to match it’s for everyone to look like they belong together. Start with one outfit you love (usually Mom’s), then build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around it using 3–5 complementary colors.
Keep these things in mind:
- Coordinate, don’t match. Choose colors from the same palette rather than putting everyone in the exact same shade.
- Mix textures. Linen, knits, denim, corduroy, cotton, lace and subtle patterns add dimension without distracting.
- Limit patterns. One or two patterned pieces in a family usually photographs better than everyone wearing a print.
- Think about movement. Flowy dresses, skirts and lightweight layers photograph beautifully especially when we’re walking, playing or working with a little wind.
- Skip large logos and graphics. They tend to pull attention away from faces.
- Watch the shoes. Shoes are part of the outfit! Neutral boots, loafers, sandals and simple sneakers generally photograph better than athletic shoes or neon colors.
- Don’t forget accessories. A cardigan, jacket, belt, simple jewelry or hat can make an outfit feel finished without making it overly styled.
- Comfort matters. If your child hates what they’re wearing, it will show. Choose something they can comfortably sit, walk, cuddle and play in.
Where to Shop
Old Navy — Best budget-friendly option for the whole family. They carry women, men, kids, toddlers and babies, which makes coordinating everyone much easier.
H&M — Great for affordable neutrals, kids’ clothing, dresses, sweaters and layering pieces. They have women, men and kids in one place.
Abercrombie & Fitch — One of my favorites for Mom and Dad. Think elevated basics, dresses, sweaters, denim and neutral pieces that feel current without looking overly trendy. Their kids line also makes coordinating easier.
Quince — Especially good for Mom. Their dresses, sweaters, linen and simple elevated basics would work beautifully with the softer palettes you’re showing in these guides.
Nordstrom — Great when you’re looking for something a little more special or want to shop multiple brands in one place, particularly for children’s dresses, sweaters, shoes and accessories.
